Watts Up This Week

While many are coming down from an amazing SFARC campout, we’re gearing up for what’s in store in the coming week. A B1G thank you to Brian Gohl (the brains and muscle) behind the event and Smitty (WB1G) for bringing the “FU” in FUN. :). <- If you can’t laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at? All joking aside, what makes a group campout fun like that is the people, and boy did we have a fun group. Thanks to everyone else involved in making it a wonderful time. At next years campout, Smitty (WB1G) will be providing a session on how to keep your RV in tip top shape while making repairs on the go. CLUB BREAKFAST — THIS SATURDAY Get your food on and join us for breakfast on Saturday at 7:30A at Wings in Auburn. POTLUCK PICNIC IN THE PARK — OCTOBER 12TH Fall is approaching and before we know it, the holidays will be here. It’s the perfect time of year to get together with your radio friends and enjoy a Potluck Picnic In The Park on October 12th @ 4 PM at Auburn Recreation Park. Our next club meeting will be on October 11 at 7:30 PM at the Confluence (formerly Crossroads) Church Gym in Auburn, California and on Zoom at zoom.w6ek.org. Jim (WA8MPA) will be doing a live demonstration showing how input levels to a radio transmitter affects spectral purity, and Orion (AI6JB) has prepared a talk about radiosport, complete with tips and hints on how to maximize your score and work contests efficiently. Whether you’re a seasoned contester or new to this exciting side of amateur radio, join us for an informative time.

This just in from the SFARC VE Team

A big congratulations to the newest General and Extra in the Sacramento Valley, Stanley Lehman (KO6FMI /AG) and Robert Miller (KO6EXL /AE). Honorable mention to Robert for a PERFECT SCORE tonight on his extra exam, 50/50! The next chance to upgrade is October 7th with SFARC.

Looking Forward September

We start off the month of September with a VE testing session on the evening of the 9th. A few weeks ago John (KO6COW) and his son visited me at work to get an older-model 2 meter radio tested and repaired. Among other things he mentioned his son might be ready to test for his Technician license soon, so I’m looking forward to seeing them there and helping them along the way.  Testing starts at around 7 PM, but the VEs and Elmers will be gathering for a dinner at 5 PM. If you’re planning on coming by to take an exam, why not come and join us for some great food?

Our next club meeting will be on September 13 at 7:30 PM at the Auburn Crossroads Church and on Zoom at zoom.w6ek.org. With the California QSO Party approaching fast, Jim (W6JCZ) will be giving a talk on how to optimize your HF reception. Going beyond the volume and tuning knob, there are many controls and functions on HF transceivers that increase signal intelligibility. Whether you’re looking to score higher in contests or increase your chances of copying a distant station, join us to learn about everything you can do to make your radio sound better!

The club campout at Stampede Reservoir officially starts a week later on the 19th and runs through the 22nd. I’m looking forward to the great pictures and stories that’ll be shared on the website and repeater, and I hope everyone has a fun and safe time throughout.

This month we’ll meet at Wings Grill & Espresso Bar (at the Auburn Airport) for our breakfast on the 28th at 7:30 AM, followed by a radio direction finding exercise. These events are always fun, and they’re essentially a radio hide-and-seek game in which participants arm themselves with receiving equipment to find the hidden transmitter placed in a given area. Our club fox hunts have attracted quite a few members recently, and I always love it when we all gather at the end to talk about what worked and what didn’t this time around.

And finally, here’s something we can all look forward to:

Cooler weather and more opportunities to be comfortable outside. Maybe I’ll catch you activating POTA or just operating portable one of these days.

Watts Up This Week

A few days later than normal but we’ve got some stuff lined up this weekend.

This Saturday (August 31), come join us at Wings at the Auburn Airport for breakfast. The fun starts at 7:30 AM. Join us for some good conversation, great food, and the coolest breakfast venue around. Following breakfast at 9AM, Chris (N6CTC) and Jaxon will leading a Fox Hunt starting at Wings.

The SFARC Campout is almost here. There are still camp spots available at Logger Campground @ Stampede Reservoir (book your own site). Once you have a campsite booked, PLEASE RSVP at https://www.w6ek.org/activities/campout and let us know you’re coming so we can make sure we bring enough food to feed a small country. The deadline to RSVP is September 13th, less than 2 weeks away.

And last but not least… you may have seen this on our social media channels OR on our website.

We all enjoy a hobby backed by science and theory however sometimes we’re touched by events that can’t be quantified and just don’t make any sense. With permission from the family, I’d like to ask for your help in supporting Amir (N6ADL) and Michelle Larian. For those new to the club, Amir has been a member of SFARC for some time and was our previous webmaster.

Amir and Michelle Larian welcomed their second daughter, Zahra June, into this world on August ninth, 2024. Zahra was born with an extremely rare neurological disease that severely limited her time with Amir and Michelle. Donations will go towards medical bills and any other expenses that arise during this time, while Michelle & Amir are both on leave from work for an extended amount of time. Anything you can do to help is appreciated.
