Watts Up This Week

For starts, please join me in congratulating the following folks.

for those without site, a BIG thank you to Jim Zheng (W6JCZ) for taking over as the Sierra Signals Editor. Another thank you to Brian Gohl (AI6US) for volunteering to take over as the Repeater Committee Chair. And a final thanks to Jeff Morgan (KW6U) for all the work done facilitating the repeater project to this point.

If you didn’t make the meeting last Friday, you missed a great night including a really cool presentation from Placer County Emergency Coordinator Scott Read (KM6RFB). We’ll have all the resource links from that presentation posted real soon at w6ek.org.

Last call to sign up for the SFARC General License class starting on Tuesday (August 13th) @ 7 PM PT. More information can be found @ www.w6ek.org/aboutsfarc/classesandtraining

If you haven’t checked out SFARC’s Friday Night Trivia night, come and join us this Friday on the W6EK 2-meter machine at 7:30PM PT. Sometimes we even have a trivia “after hours” net that extends into the evening. And don’t forget the SFARC Campout is coming up in about a month. Have you reserved your campsite yet? Head over to www.w6ek.org for more information or to RSVP so we know how many folks we’re preparing some of those awesome meals.

If you’re a contester, this weekend is the North American QSO Party SSB. “The Bands Will Be Alive With The Sounds of… CQ Contest CQ Contest…” 🙂

Looking Forward August

After two exciting months of back-to-back club events, the month of August is rather light with a few things of note.

After a break in July, we will resume VE testing on the evening of the 5th. Following a dinner VEs and Elmers will gather at 7 PM to administer exams for new hams and those looking to upgrade their license. It’s always a good time and I love seeing the candidates get their new amateur radio privileges at the end of the night. More than just an exam session, we answer candidates’ questions before and after the exam to give them a personalized experience.

That same week we will have our club meeting at 7:30 PM on Friday at the Auburn Crossroads Church South Campus Gym and on Zoom. Scott (KM6RFB) will give a talk on internet resources providing situational awareness. With rapidly changing weather and emergency events that can arise at a moment’s notice, come join us and learn about free public resources that you can rely on when disaster strikes.

Our monthly club breakfast will be held at Wings on the 31st. Stick around after the meal for a fox hunt and put your equipment (and skills) to the test in finding the hidden transmitter!

Oh, and one last thing: I’m sure we’re all looking forward to cooler weather ahead, since this summer’s been one of the hottest around with record-breaking heat waves. Keep cool and stay hydrated, and look after your friends and family.

Watts Up This Week

We’ve got some fun lined up for the weekend with a preview to next week.

THIS SATURDAY, CLUB BREAKFAST – CHANGE OF VENUE

Its the right time of year to sit on the patio and watch the planes take off and land so we’ve switched up the venue for the club breakfast this weekend to Wings Grill at the on the Auburn Airport on 13595 New Airport Road in Auburn. The fun starts at 0730. 🙂

FOX HUNT TO FOLLOW
This time we’re headed to Orangevale. The pre-meeting will start at 9:30 AM with the Fox Hunt beginning at 9:45 AM. The pre-meeting will be at the Orangevale Community Center at the corner of Filbert Ave and Oak Ave, in Orangevale. The Fox Tender for this month is Emiliano (KO6AJO). The RF Comms will be on 146.430 MHz simplex. The transmitter frequency will be 146.535 MHz simplex with an output power will be 2 watts.

More information can be found @ https://www.w6ek.org/activities/foxhunt

A LOOK FORWARD TO NEXT WEEK – 5TH WEDNESDAY PRESENTATION ON ZOOM
Special Zoom Presentation – “Going On Your First DXpedition”
Join SFARC on July 31st @ 7:30 PM in the Club Zoom Room as Alan (K7AR) will give a presentation on setting up for your first DXpedition. As a follow-up to his excellent presentation on FT8 Fox/Hound mode, Alan will go into what it takes to plan, set up for, and work a DXpedition. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in what goes into an operation, gaining an appreciation of those that make it possible for hams to work exotic locations, and understanding the challenges involved in traveling abroad with radio equipment. All are welcome to join!
