SFARC has been in the process of retaining as much history about the club as possible. Thanks to Craig Bledsoe (KL7H) for this look back at one of SFARC’s QSL cards prior to the adoption of the W6EK call sign.
K6CBP, the call sign of founding member W.C. Bauman, became the club’s own in 1962. By January of 1964, the club treasurer was reporting $76.43 in the K6CBP checking account, with Jim Carman named as the trustee.
This is a small slice of what we’ve captured as part of our ongoing history project.

Hello SFARC Members and Friends,
A slightly delayed weekly email due to my travel but a few updates for things coming up.
CHANGES TO THE CLUB BREAKFAST AND FOX HUNT FOR OCTOBER
Starting this month, the club breakfast location has change to Awful Annie’s in Auburn. Therefore, Awful Annie’s will also be the location of the Fox Hunt pre-meeting/briefing and the start of the Hunt. If you need additional information, address, or a map to the new location, CLICK HERE.
That’s it for this week, make it a good one.

Behold the Golden Brick: a humble brick-style handheld radio, immortalized in gold paint (I’m not sure what metal is underneath).
Gerry Brentnall (WA6E) created it because the club’s highest honor shouldn’t be a plaque on the wall. It should be something heavy, ridiculous, and impossible to ignore. Members pass the Golden Brick from one to the next at each year’s Christmas dinner party, with the current holder presenting it after dinner alongside the mandatory speeches (sometimes a bit of a roast). It is, in Gerry’s own words, “a much sought-after and coveted award given for outstanding or otherwise remarkable service to the club.” Note the qualifier: “outstanding” or “otherwise remarkable”. In other words, you don’t have to be a hero. You just have to be a legend in your own way.
PAST HOLDERS INCLUDE

2023 Golden Brick Holder: Smitty (WB1G)
2024 Golden Brick Holder: Greydon Hicks (KC6SLE)
2025 Golden Brick Holder: Greg Dolkas (KO6TH)
2026 Golden Brick Holder: Orion Endres (AI6JB)
Whoever holds the Brick holds the club’s highest calling: to serve, to show up, and to be the kind of ham everyone else is glad to know.
The next SFARC Fox Hunt will be on Saturday, October 31, immediately following the club breakfast.
Two important changes to this month’s Fox Hunt. The club breakfast in October will be at Awful Annies in Auburn. Therefore, Awful Annies will be the site of both the Fox Hunt pre-meeting/briefing and the start of the Hunt. And because Awful Annies does not open until later than previous breakfast sites, the pre-meeting will start 15 minutes later than in the past, will start at 9:15 AM. The Fox Hunt will start at the usual time of 9:30 AM.
Our Fox Tender for October will be Frank KG9M. Thank you, Frank!

CLUB MEETING REMINDER — THIS FRIDAY (10/09/2026) @ 7:30 PM
Scott KM6RFB will share his personal journey along the path to becoming an AUX-C — a certified Auxiliary Communicator. For those of us in amateur radio, we know how powerful our hobby can be, but this certification takes that passion and transforms it into a vital, formal asset for emergency management. This training is the on-ramp for Amateur Radio Emergency Communicators to become recognized by Public Safety agencies by having achieved this level of credentialing. This is done through classroom training and PTB Position Task Books and peer review.
CLUB HISTORY — BRICK BY BRICK — HELP US FILL IN THE GAPS
If you’ve been with SFARC for any number of years, your expertise is requested. As part of a project to retain the deep history of SFARC, I’ve been training an AI model to data mine everything known about SFARC. Those who have been with the club for some time will appreciate what we’ve come up with. After gigs of data and hours of analysis, I’d like to invite YOU to take a look @ https://www.w6ek.org/aboutsfarc/history
This history of SFARC was assembled by searching, cross-referencing and data mining essentially every surviving record of the club including its own paperwork, the federal and ARRL record, the amateur press, and the public databases; then reconciling them against each other. Where sources disagreed, the disagreement has been reported rather than smoothed over. Where nothing could be found, that has been said plainly. The method was itself an experiment. Club webmaster Smitty, WB1G, fed the club’s entire documentary record through an AI model and taught it, batch by batch, how to read this club. Its people, its call signs, its recurring columns, the shorthand its secretaries used, so that it could work through thirty-four years of newsletters, the minute archives, the file library, the bylaws, the forms and the flyers, and fifteen thousand messages of the club’s own mailing list, and surface connections no one person could hold in their head at once.

None of which happens in a vacuum. A history like this is only possible because people did the unglamorous work first, for years, with no guarantee anyone would ever read it: secretaries who wrote the minutes, editors who got a newsletter out every month, and members who kept the paper instead of throwing it away.
Two people deserve particular thanks. Gary Cunningham, KQ6RT, served this club as its historian for more than a decade, and month after month transcribed the original minute books into the newsletter — 1958, the 1960s, the revival years, 1983. Nearly everything this page can say about the club’s first twenty-five years exists because he sat down and typed it out. And Greg Dolkas, KO6TH, whose work digitizing a great deal of the club’s old documentation is the reason those records could be searched at all rather than sitting in a box. The club owes them both more than a footnote.
